ABSTRACT

Nanofibers are a type of nanomaterial with a diameter ranging from ten to a few hundred nanometers with a high surface-to-volume ratio and porosity. They can build a network of high-porosity material with excellent connectivity within the pores, making them a preferred option for numerous applications. This review explores nanofibers from the synthesis techniques to fabricate nanofibers, with an emphasis on the technological applications of nanofibers like water and air filtration, photovoltaics, batteries and fuel cells, gas sensing, photocatalysis, and biomedical applications like wound dressing and drug delivery. The nanofiber production market has an expected compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 6% and should reach around 26 million US $ in 2026. The limitations and potential opportunities for large-scale applications of nano-fibrous membranes are also discussed. We expect this review could provide enriched information to better understand Electrospun Polymer Nanofiber Technology and recent advances in this field. © 2023 Bentham Science Publishers.

ABSTRACT

There is evidence that sacred places across the world are launching augmented reality (AR) applications. This application of AR is somehow prompted by the most recent Covid-19 pandemic where in-person experiences are altered by the virtual. AR, as an innovative technology, augments the physical environment with digitally generated imagery that can generate privileges for tourists in sacred places and become the reason to trigger cultural conflicts and religious controversy. This in-depth interview-based research aims to explore the tourists' views and ideas of applying AR in the Mosque City of Bagerhat of Bangladesh, a UNESCO World Heritage Site in terms of possibilities, cultural conflicts, and religious controversy. Findings show that the application of AR in a sacred place can support tourists in many useful ways, can offer them positive experiences, and help in sustainability concerns of the site. However, the application of AR in a sacred place can be an element of conflicting interests between the religious and general tourists. Adequate attention is thus required from the parties involved in terms of applying AR in the Mosque City of Bagerhat of Bangladesh, a sacred religious site.

ABSTRACT

It has been recognized that Digitalization in the oil and gas industry, as emerging information communication and technology, can improve collaboration to different extents. However, because of the fast progress of Digitalization adoption both on the scope and in-depth, there is a knowledge gap between industry and academia that lacks systematic analysis on critical success factors (CSFs) of implementing Digitalization for collaboration in the oil and gas industry. This study develops a digitalization framework for collaboration from technical, organizational, process, and legal scopes. It identifies the CSFs of Digitalization in each scope based on the latest publications. From a system analysis perspective, the pair-relationship matrix is established to reveal the hidden effect between CSFs. The CSFs in the specific Digitalization application areas are identified based on the matrix. The Innovative Digital Race is based on the evolution of the operational backbone of the engineering domain, driven by advancements in Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning, Deep Learning, Automation, energy technologies, and data-driven prediction and analytics. Organizations are constantly buffeted by unexpected events, from the COVID-19 pandemic to climate change to political unrest. In contrast, the promise of digital transformation to prosper and outperform the challenges during disturbances stays apparent as digital is responsible for supporting digital enterprise technology. As a result, enterprises can embrace innovations to accelerate growth and strategically drive the enterprise forward through gaining trusted digital connections, solutions to disruptive scale digital creativity, and innovative capacities to post business growth and resilience. © 2022, Offshore Technology Conference. ABSTRACT

The circular economy (CE) has emerged as a paradigm to protect the environment and the well-being of future generations. In parallel, Blockchain technology (BC) has emerged as a critical enabler for accelerating the transition toward a CE. In order to understand and summarize prior research on the role of BC in the CE, we conducted a systematic literature review (SLR) of 70 seminal articles published before July 2022. Six main themes emerged: a) CE approaches and practices, b) BC and the integration of the Internet of Things (IoT), c) sustainable supply chain management, d) BC and the CE in the COVID-19 era, e) sector-specific BC applications, and f) barriers to BC adoption in the CE. Furthermore, we develop a comprehensive framework that integrates stakeholders, strategies and practices, industrial sectors and a BC-enabled CE. © 2022 The Author(s)

ABSTRACT

As a consequence of the global pandemic, many restrictions and rules were enforced. One predicament was the travel restrictions and requirements put into place with regard to vaccinations. Countries worldwide now require people to be vaccinated upon entry. The process of validating vaccine doses requires lots of paperwork and is inefficient. Blockchain is an uprising technology that is secure and fast at carrying out transactions. We propose implementing vaccine dose verifications between countries through vaccine certificates using Blockchain as an effective solution. The need for a common shared database, avoiding a trusted third party to administrate the network, having several countries involved, ensuring privacy and security, and accountability logs make Blockchain needed in this scenario. Digital vaccine certificates are very sensitive information that must be kept private and secure but accessible to several entities. Blockchain ensures the aforementioned requirements are met while preserving the integrity of the VDCs. This paper describes blockchain technology and its application in digital vaccine certificates. © 2022 IEEE.

ABSTRACT

This research reports on a case study applying synchronous computer-mediated communication (SCMC) in a Wuhan university’s English language classes during the COVID-19 pandemic. The aim was to identify the advantages and disadvantages of using synchronous technology applications in online English language courses. The dataset consisted of ethnographic observations and in-depth interviews with the teacher and students. The thematic analysis revealed that the advantages of the SCMC include the availability of abundant learning resources, the affordance of instant information exchange, and a comparatively relaxed learning environment. Two major disadvantages were that the non-face-to-face communication tended to lead to the teacher’s “one-person” show, and the limited screen size reduced eye contact between the teacher and students. The present research indicates that SCMC can be applied during and after the pandemic to foster student discussion and collaboration. We also suggest that when language teachers deliver courses using SCMC tools or platforms, students should be given abundant opportunities to express their opinions. © 2021, Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

ABSTRACT

The global COVID-19 crisis has accelerated the adoption of online delivery methods supported by accessible technologies, applications, and academic learning platforms. There is a larger demand for remote courses by companies, universities, and grade schools. Distance education has become one of the learning options most used by universities, where interactive learning is available. Students can also review the content of the courses on a Learning Management System (LMS) and study in their own time, supplemented with face-to-face or remote tutoring sessions in case of specific doubts. Online education is focused on learning content more than the communication between students and tutors. At the University of Texas at El Paso, Texas, Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, we have additional challenges due to the USA and Mexico border's geographic location because some of our students are living in Mexico, and we are supporting them virtually. The delivery of online laboratories was implemented using remote access to the equipment in the university's physical laboratories;moreover, students acquired portable equipment designed to work at home, creating an environment similar to a real laboratory but with some limitations. Students opted for one method or another depending on vendor availability or their resources. This paper explores the differences, as well as the limitations, between the tools used for distance learning in the circuit's laboratories. As a case of study, there is a comparison between face-to-face and remote laboratory sessions and personal laboratory at home scenarios. Also, the paper describes the students' benefits and challenges and the response of students due to geographic limitations. © American Society for Engineering Education, 2021
